Ideas don’t change
the world.
Implemented ideas do.

Upstream.Africa is a human-centred implementation studio, helping African organisations turn ambitious ideas into working systems, brands and ventures.

01 — The thesis

The world has too many ideas.
It needs more action.

Good research, good technology and genuinely good ideas fail every day — not because they were wrong, but because nobody carried them across the gap between a recommendation and a working reality. Upstream exists in that gap: the point where an idea either becomes adopted practice or evaporates into another presentation.

So we work upstream — at the root cause, the first principle, the neglected human detail. We design, build and implement alongside the people who will actually use the thing, and we stay until it works. Then we measure what we handed back.

02 — What we’re building

One studio, sequenced deliberately.

We are launching in order, not all at once. Focus first, breadth when the evidence earns it.

Upstream Practice

Smarter practice. More time for care.

AI and workflow optimisation for private doctors and small practices — fewer evenings lost to documentation, faster letters, better evidence retrieval, lower cognitive load.

First commercial wedge

Upstream Studio

Design as an act of care.

Brand strategy and visual systems, websites and digital products, service design and communication for organisations building Africa's future.

In build

Upstream Research

Evidence, translated.

Research systems, evidence synthesis and scientific communication — the work of turning findings into decisions people can act on.

Next

Upstream Health Systems

Better systems behind better care.

Advisory work for institutions, NGOs and health organisations redesigning how care is planned, delivered and measured.

Next

Upstream Academy

Youth at the frontier.

Workshops, cohorts and professional training — building a network of young African implementers with real responsibility and real quality assurance.

The promise

Performance without losing humanity.

03 — How we work

Principles we can be held to.

01

Action over theatre

The work has to become real, adopted and used. We stay until it does.

02

Humanity and performance

We reject the false choice between care and excellence. Both, or it isn't finished.

03

Design as care

Details tell you whether anyone was considered. Nothing human is an afterthought.

04

Africa as source

Not a market or a beneficiary — an origin, and a place globally useful ideas come from.

05

Root-cause thinking

Work upstream, at the point of leverage, not on the visible symptom.

06

Capability over dependency

Every project leaves the client stronger, and able to keep going without us.

04 — Who’s behind it

Waheed Amanjee

Co-founder, WiZmedCo-founder, African Research Society

He grew up in Harding, a small farming town in KwaZulu-Natal, where a Grade 7 science-fair project first turned curiosity into something public. He is now in his final year of medicine at UCT, running clinical training alongside an MSc in neurogenomics as a Mandela Rhodes Scholar.

The thread has never been commerce for its own sake. It is the distance between what is possible and what people can actually access. Upstream is that instinct applied to organisations: social responsiveness and commerce in the same room, systems rather than symptoms, and structures that say, this is yours too.
